I went to school and I all I got was a piece of paper.
Ok it’s a whole lot more then just a piece of paper but we have to admit that the way school is done needs to be turned upside down on it’s head. I mean how effective is it really to be an expert at solving math problems (except for those going into those types of industries of course) and yet disregard real life problems like money management (you know the thing we’ll spend our whole lives trying to make).
Well Seth Godin knows a thing or two about creating change and where could change be more important then in our schools?
Enter Stop Stealing Dreams (What is school for?) an ebook from the genius of Seth Godin. In his own words here’s what the manifesto covers:
The economy has changed, probably forever.
School hasn’t.
School was invented to create a constant stream of compliant factory workers to the growing businesses of the 1900s. It continues to do an excellent job at achieving this goal, but it’s not a goal we need to achieve any longer.
In this 30,000 word manifesto, I imagine a different set of goals and start (I hope) a discussion about how we can reach them. One thing is certain: if we keep doing what we’ve been doing, we’re going to keep getting what we’ve been getting.
Our kids are too important to sacrifice to the status quo.
