Removed is an awesome project by photographer Eric Pickersgill who was inspired to do the series after observing a family sitting next to him in a cafe. Here is what he wrote about his observation:
“Family sitting next to me at Illium café in Troy, NY is so disconnected from one another. Not much talking. Father and two daughters have their own phones out. Mom doesn’t have one or chooses to leave it put away. She stares out the window, sad and alone in the company of her closest family. Dad looks up every so often to announce some obscure piece of info he found online. Twice he goes on about a large fish that was caught. No one replies. I am saddened by the use of technology for interaction in exchange for not interacting. This has never happened before and I doubt we have scratched the surface of the social impact of this new experience. Mom has her phone out now.”

The Light Phone is a credit card-sized cell phone that was actually designed to be used as little as possible. The Light Phone dubs itself your phone away from phone, helping you disconnect and enjoy the day free of distractions while still never missing a call from mom.
In the creators own words:
The Light Phone is a discreet credit card sized mobile phone designed to be used as little as possible. It works as a stand alone device or it can get calls forwarded from your existing phone number via an app. Other features are limited to ten speed dials and a time display. Light works independently of your carrier as an inexpensive, pre-paid phone. We are also going to offer the phone with an affordable unlimited plan.

The Kingii is a wearable flotation device. The device was invented by Tom Agapiades who lost a good friend to drowning. He didn’t want it to happen to anyone else so the experience inspired him to develop a solution against drowning, one of the leading causes of death.

HUG is an app that allows you to send a remote “hug” that people can feel. Dubbed the worlds first emoji you can feel. Doesn’t beat the real thing of course, but I guess if I was halfway around the world my mom would appreciate the gesture, or be freaked out about putting her cell phone against her heart for too long due to cell phone radiation. Either way it’s the thought that counts and fake hugs are better than no hugs at all, I suppose.
Alive is offline, where the world is more beautiful than the world wide web.
Designer and artist Molly McLeod created this collection of wallpapers that serve as a subtle reminder that life is what happens all around us when we’re busy looking down at our cell phones.
Urging you to enjoy the moment instead of taking a picture or look around you instead of down at your phone, these wallpapers give us a gentle nudge away from technology and back towards humanity.
You can download this much needed awesomeness here.

Magic is a text message based service that allows you to get whatever you want on demand with no hassle (as long as it’s not illegal of course!).
Magic has trained operators standing by 24/7 to answer all of your requests. You simply send them a text message, and they’ll get you what you want by ordering what you need from the appropriate service (e.g. DoorDash, Instacart, Postmates, etc.), and dealing with them for you so you just automatically get what you want, like magic…
I’m impressed and I think Houdini would be as well.
When Sten Kirkbak lost his 3-year old son Filip for thirty minutes, it inspired the idea for ‘FiLIP’: a wearable Smart Locator and Phone for kids designed to keep parents and their young children in touch. Every parent wants their child to have the freedom to explore, discover and just be a kid. Now parents can stay in touch on any adventure. Visit http://www.myfilip.com for more information or to buy FiLIP.
This is a game changer for kids safety and parents piece of mind!
I don’t have kids but this is so cool I would have a kid just to buy them this watch. On second thought scratch that, I’ll buy one for my niece and nephews instead!
Quality Time is an Android app that helps you monitor and get real time reports on how much time you spend on your smartphone and on your favorite apps.
You can set usage limits for your phone or for specific apps and receive alerts when you exceed your limits. You can also kick you phone overuse habit with the “Take a Break” feature, to digitally unplug yourself from your phone.
As they say “life is what happens to you while you’re looking at your smartphone.” Quality time will help you get your life back, or at least make you realize how much time you’re wasting on your DUMB smartphone!
